Assignment 1 - Introduction to Flash MX

Site Review

Review a Flash site and write a site review. This exercise will introduce you to the creative uses of Flash and provide you with some inspiration for the final project you will create in this course.

Select a site that uses Flash. Write a critique of the site with a link to the site's URL. Tell us how Flash enhances the site or not, why you like it, etc. Tell us what OS, browser and *modem speed* you're using to view the site. Think about the following criteria when viewing the site and writing your report:

  • Intuitive, Logical, Consistent Navigation - Was it obvious what to click? Were all rollovers buttons?
  • General Look & Feel - Does the site maintain a consistent theme, color scheme, quality of graphics and sound or other multimedia?
  • Loading Time - Was it worth the wait? How did the site retain your interest while the content was loading?
  • Was there a choice of HTML and Flash and if so, view both versions.  Did the Flash version enhance or detract from the HTML version?  How and why?
  • Was there a way out of every screen back to a main menu without having to watch a long preloader or animation each time you want to go back to the main menu?
  • Did they enable you to toggle the sound off and on?

Use a search engine for Flash sites or go to the Macromedia Flash Gallery for a link to sites that use Flash. Post the URL of the site you review. Submit the equivalent of a one page typewritten report. If you are taking this course as a self-learner, this exercise will be helpful even if you don't submit a written review because it will provide inspiration and start you thinking about techniques and features used to create an effective user experience.

Note: Review a professional Flash Internet site and not a site of a former student from this course.

Solution

There is no solution provided for this assignment. You are not asked to create a Flash .swf.
