Lesson 4.3 Duplicating a Symbol

There are several ways to duplicate a symbol. You will learn two ways to duplicate a symbol from the library.

  • One is to right-click on the symbol name in the bottom pane and you'll get a context-sensitive menu from which to select Duplicate.
  • The other is to click on the Options drop-down menu in the upper right hand corner of the library and select Duplicate.

Take a look at the two illustrations that follow and examine the other options available from these windows. I have cut off the options drop-down menu in this graphic because there isn't anything we will be using there for a while. You can open your own library and take a look at the options.

When you Duplicate a symbol either of these two ways, Flash will display the Duplicate Symbol window and enter a default name of "yoursymbol copy" with the same behavior as the original symbol.

I changed the Mouse copy Symbol Name to: 'mouse2'.

Double click on the mouse2 name in the library to open the edit symbol window. Take a good look at this window. Do you see anything different? Look carefully. You're not in the main timeline anymore. It's hard to know because you don't have any elements on the stage in the main timeline. A give-away is up at the top of the stage below the default position of the timeline. You'll see breadcrumbing to indicate where you are located in the Flash movie.
