Description

Text is an integral part of all design.  It's not only the words that have power.  The power of the words is affected by their placements, movement, color, size, contrast, shape of the letters, space between letters, and font faces.  There's a study of text and type called "typography" which is an art form in itself.

In this Lesson, you will learn about computer fonts and how to use fonts effectively in Flash. You will learn how to use different types of Flash text and will experiment with 'Flashy' text effects.

Objectives

By the end of this Lesson, you will successfully:

  • differentiate among static, input, and dynamic text.
  • manipulate text using the Properties Inspector (PI).
  • use the Text Editing tools of Flash.
  • understand the differences between defined font faces and device fonts.
  • create TextFX using the Break Apart command to shape tween text.
  • demonstrate use of Easing and Shape Hints to effect transitions of shape tweening.

Make the Connection

Start looking at designs that incorporate images and text. Look at websites, magazine ads, ads on the sides or back of public transportation, book covers, etc.

How is the text incorporated into the design?  Do some designs look as though the text is an afterthought?  Does the text feel compressed into an area and fighting with the image(s), or is the text a nice complement or contrast to the design? Try squinting and viewing the text as a shape, without reading the words. Start to see things in a new way.
