Solution: Lab 6 - Global Patterns in Green Up and Green Down

Questions 1-5 (15 points possible for each question. Points allocated according to the following):

+ 5 points Student correctly identifies the landcover. If answer is not written in a complete sentence, student will receive 1 point.
+ 0-10 points Student provides evidence of how he reached his conclusion. Evidence may include citation of the highest and lowest months of vegetation vigor correlated to darkness in the flip book, the effect of seasons on NDVI, and the amount of change correlated to change in value in the flip book.

1. (15 pts)
What is land cover #1 (solid triangles)?  What evidence did you use to come to this conclusion?
Broad leaf evergreen
2. (15 pts)
What is land cover #2 (open squares)?  What evidence did you use to come to this conclusion?
South African wooded grasslands
3. (15 pts)
What is land cover #3 (open circles)?  What evidence did you use to come to this conclusion?
North African wooded grasslands
4. (15 pts)
What is land cover #4 (open triangles)?  What evidence did you use to come to this conclusion?
Desert
5. (15 pts)
What is land cover #5 (solid circles)?  What evidence did you use to come to this conclusion?
Arctic Tundra

Question 6 (25 points possible. Points allocated according to the following):

6. (0-25 pts) In two or more paragraphs, discuss the patterns of green up and senescence around your home.  How do these patterns relate to the seasons and the amount of available insolation?

For full credit, student:

A) Discusses patterns of greenup and senescence around his/her home citing specific examples (e.g. all the leaves fall in October/November, so this is the period of scenence, the grass grows the most in June-August, so this is a period of maximum greenup.)

B) Relates the patterns of greenup and senscence to seasonal cycles of insolation (e.g. in the Northern Hemisphere we receive maximum insolation from May - July so this relates directly to the period of maximum greenup).

For partial credit, student does either A or B, or does each partially, or cites incorrect information in his/her discussion.
