Lesson 7 - Uploading

Putting your webpage up on the Internet is going to give you the opportunity to amaze your family and influence your friends. And, it's so easy to do!

These directions are for using the Lycos hosting service, Angelfire.com. However, you can use any service that you know about. If you already have a website someplace else, you can use that to upload your HTML documents in this course.

Webhosting Services

There are many free webhosting sites on the web. Do a search for Free Webhosts and then, follow the instructions for whatever service you select.

If you are a professional, you are recommended to find a webhost where you can get your own domain, such as http://www.your_business_name.com. There are a lot of full-service webhosts that cost as little as US $5/month, which provide services such as cgi for forms and everything else you will need for this course, and more. If you are taking this course at a school for credit with an instructor, the school may provide webhosting services for the length of the course.

Uploading to Angelfire

The following instructions are for the Angelfire account.  Note that all free webhosting services such as Angelfire will have pop-up ads.

Angelfire Front Page

In the middle column of the Angelfire front page, you'll see their ad for Free Angelfire. Click on the Sign up link.

Angelfire Sign up link

Once you get in, you'll have to click to Sign Me Up! again.

Next, you'll be given a page full of blank boxes to fill in. The first part is to figure out the path to your website. If you click on the small black arrows, you'll see a long list of folders on the Angelfire system. You can pick the one you most identify with. In the second box, you get to type whatever you want. This is the name of the folder where you'll keep all your HTML documents and images. These two folders will determine the URL for your website.

Note: The following example if for demonstration only. Please choose a different folder and folder name for determining the URL of your website on Angelfire.com.

In the example below, you can choose bug from the drop-down list, and then type csis6 in the second box. Your website will have this URL:

http://www.angelfire.com/bug/csis6/xxxx.html

The xxxx.html will be replaced with firstpage.html, or lists.html, or one of your other pages.

Your URL on Angelfire

The two folders, bug/csis6 will be your user ID. You can choose your own password in the two lower boxes.

When you're choosing your password, keep it simple -- all lower case letters and maybe a number or two. Angelfire allows letters, numbers and hyphens, but the advice to you would be to stay away even from the hyphens. And, don't capitalize. Nobody can ever remember what letters they capitalized.

The next few boxes want your name, address, telephone number, etc. You can give them your title, name, zip code and email address. The rest isn't required.

At the bottom of the page, they want you to enter a confirmation code. Enter the number you see printed in the smeared gray letters. Then, click on the Submit button.

Finally, you've finished the set-up.

Your user ID is the two folders that you chose for your URL. In the context of the above example, the user ID is bug/csis6. Your user ID will be the names you typed in for the folders. Your password is the word you made up. Click the link to activate your account and start building.

This is the end of Lesson 7. Please go to the next lesson.
