Skills Tests

How to use the Skill Tests

Be Patient

The skills tests used here are Java applets that show a musical staff and/or a keyboard and/or play sounds.

The applet tests will often take much longer to load than standard web-based, html tests so please be patient. The applets are interactive and clicking on different parts of the test can do different things.

The Keyboard

Sometimes, you will be asked to select one or more notes on the keyboard as part of an answer to a question. By clicking on a key with the mouse, the key will hilite to a blue color that shows it is selected.

Sometimes, clicking any other key will erase the hilite of the first key selected but other times, it only adds an additional hilited key. To deselect a key, double click it.

To erase all the keys, double click in the small white boarder of the keyboard and all the keys will return to the deselected white.
Notice that middle C or C4 is a light grey color. When it is highlited, it becomes a light blue.

If you see a green key, it is fixed and cannot be selected or deselected.

The Musical Staff

At times, you will be asked to enter a note on the musical staff as part of an answer. Like the keyboard, you click on the staff on the line or space you want and a note will appear.

Whether you get a sharped note or a flatted note or an natural note depends on the button selection on the right. If no button is hilited, you will usually get a natural.

But the sharp button must be hilited to get a sharp and you can be sure you get one because a sharp will appear with the note on the staff.

The same is true for flats.

Like the keyboard, sometimes any note you have entered will be erased if you select another note. But other times, you will actually get additional notes. If you want to erase a note, then select "erase" on the button bar (if it is available) and then click the note you want to erase.

Complex Questions

Later in the course, you may be asked to enter different types of notes or beam notes, etc. which will require new settings on the button panel on the right. Usually, only the buttons that you will need actually are offered on the panel.

The rule is always the same: first make a selection(s) on the button panel and then enter the note on the staff.
